Do You Need The Wound Care Clinic?
A wound is a break in the skin that is caused by disease, injury, poor circulation, diabetes, poor nutrition or other conditions. While the body generally heals wounds through a natural process, at times, some wounds do not heal the way they should. In fact, up to five million Americans suffer from chronic wounds each year. A wound that doesn’t heal places a person at risk for infection and more serious complications. The wound can also cause discomfort, pain, disfigurement and can place limits on the person’s activities and quality of life. If you have a wound or a sore that has not significantly healed in a month’s time, you should consider the McLaren Wound Care Clinic.
We Specialize in Healing Wounds
The McLaren Wound Care Clinic specializes in treating acute and chronic hard-to-heal wounds. Our specialized team of doctors and nurses are solely dedicated to treating wounds, including many that have resisted healing after months and even years of traditional treatment. Clinic team members use proven, advanced techniques to treat many types of wounds. The Wound Care Clinic follows national guidelines based on clinical evidence when treating and managing wounds. As a result, most of our patients are completely healed in just a few months. Certain patients with a poor blood supply to a wound may be referred for hyperbaric oxygen chamber therapy at McLaren Flint in Flint.
Types of wounds treated in the Clinic include:
Vascular leg ulcers
Diabetic foot ulcers
Pressure ulcers
Surgical or traumatic wounds
Wounds caused by edema (swelling), cancer and radiation treatment, burns, infections, scleroderma (a disease of connective tissue in which scar tissue forms in the skin).
Your First Visit
When you come in for your initial visit, our staff will evaluate your wound and general health. They will also review your medical history and may take a blood test. You may also need special tests that give us information about blood flow and oxygen flow in the wound area.
Your Treatment Plan
We will put together a treatment program based on your special needs. This program will include regular visits to the clinic to provide treatment, evaluate progress and make any changes that might be needed. You (or your caregiver) will be given detailed instructions in home care, dressing (bandage) changes and protecting the wound from further injury.
You Are A Vital Part of The Program
Much of the success of your treatment depends on you. Follow your treatment plan directions carefully and watch your progress closely between visits. Anytime you or your family members have questions, our staff is available. In fact we encourage you to ask questions. Our experienced staff is specially trained in all types of wound care, and we are committed to providing extensive patient education in managing the care of wounds and preventing wounds recurrence.
How The McLaren Wound Care Clinic Works with Your Physician
The McLaren Wound Care Clinic works closely with physicians who refer their patients to the clinic for care. We will discuss your treatment program with your primary care physician and keep him or her updated on your progress, unless instructed otherwise. Remember, you’ll need to keep seeing your primary care physician for routine medical care.
Insurance Coverage
Many health plans cover Wound Care Clinic treatment. Your Coverage depends on your specific plan. Our staff will assist in an explanation of your benefit plan, and payment plans can be arranged if needed.
